Born on October 1, 1980, Jaspher Penuliar studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman, majoring in painting. One of the more enigmatic artists of his generation, Penuliar often retreats to the idyllic landscapes of his hometown in Laguna, where he develops his work. There, he explores a radical vision of humanity constrained by social conventions and mores. Despite the starkness of his imagery, his paintings consistently convey hope and deliverance—his figures bathed in a promising light, suggesting that enlightenment and freedom remain within reach. His painterly style closely complements the themes he confronts.
